It looks like Naame Shaam’s campaign to elect Sepah Qods’ chief as president of Syria was not that far-fetched, after all. For the Syrian president himself has been quoted saying Major-General Qassem Soleimani should be the president of Syria. Well, almost.
According to an Iranian news website,[1] in a recent meeting with Iranian members of parliament, Syrian president Bashar al-Assad declared his and Syrian people’s ‘love’ for the person responsible for a considerable part of the bloodshed and destruction in the country: “Major General Soleimani has a place in my heart,” he reportedly said. “If he had had to run against me, he would have won the election. This is how much Syrian people love him,” he added.
In the run up to Syria’s sham presidential elections in June 2014, Naame Shaam launched a mock election campaign calling for Gen. Qassem Soleimani to be elected as the president of Syria and Bashar al-Assad as his deputy.[2] Everyone now knows that Soleimani is the de facto leader of regime-held areas in Syria. He is the one responsible for all the regime’s military as well as economic and political strategies. So, if presidential elections are to be forced upon Syrians, then why not vote for the one who has the real power? Bashar al-Assad himself seems to agree with us.
