Fighting against two states

Syrians are now indeed living two revolutions. On last Friday’s demonstrations, dubbed ‘The Friday of death barrels with an international license’ (in reference to the brutal bombing campaign by regime forces in Aleppo, in which home-made explosive barrels are dropped on residential areas), the speeches and signs declared messages of defiance against both the regime and extremist Islamist forces, such the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham (ISIS), which many Syrians now regard as the flip side of the regime.

One placard in this video from Maarrat al-Noman reads:
“Most of us are now wanted by both States” (meaning the Syrian state and the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham).

COMMENT FROM THE EDITOR:

Syrians are in fact fighting against, and fought by, more than two states. We should not forget the role of the Iranian and Russian governments, whose military and financial support has kept Bashar al-Assad’s regime going all this time.
