With new report, Congress gains ammo to fight Iran deal

A new report blasting Iran for its involvement in the Syrian civil war is drawing attention in the nation’s capital just as U.S. officials sit down with Iranians in Vienna in a last-ditch effort to reach a deal on Tehran’s nuclear program.
Staffers for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which would be responsible for the legislation imposing those new sanctions, were briefed on the report earlier this week, according to sources with knowledge of the briefing.

The report focuses on uncovering the role of the Iranian regime in Syria and is the result of a year of Naame Shaam’s work. It draws largely on information gathered from monitoring Syrian, Iranian and the international media’s coverage of events in Syria. The majority of the information and sources found in the report are thus in the public domain.

Naame Shaam has produced a 105-page report on Iran’s mischief inside Syria and its ties to al Qaeda, al Nusra, and ISIS. Al Qaeda and ISIS are under orders not to attack inside Iran in order to preserve their supply network there, the report states. The U.S. government concurs.
